Choose suitable materials
Use strong, undamaged boxes, quality tape, packing paper or bubble wrap, and soft material for filling gaps. Keep boxes small enough to lift safely and reinforce the base before filling.
Glassware and crockery
- Wrap each item separately and add cushioning to the bottom of the box.
- Place plates vertically rather than stacking them flat, with padding between pieces.
- Fill empty spaces so contents cannot move, but do not force the box closed.
- Keep heavy pieces at the bottom and lighter pieces above them.
Pictures, mirrors and ornaments
- Protect corners and surfaces, and use suitable picture or mirror cartons where possible.
- Do not allow tape to touch painted, polished or delicate surfaces.
- Wrap ornaments individually and avoid packing them with heavy objects.
- Tell the removals team about valuable, unusually shaped or especially delicate pieces.
Electronics
- Back up important data and follow the manufacturer's transport guidance.
- Photograph connections, label cables and pack accessories with the correct device.
- Use original packaging when it remains strong and suitable; otherwise add firm cushioning on every side.
- Keep electronics dry and allow temperature-sensitive equipment to acclimatise before use.
Seal and label every box
Mark the destination room, a short description and “FRAGILE” on the top and at least two sides. Tell the crew which boxes need particular care instead of relying only on labels.
