Home moving adviceYour moving-house checklist.
A straightforward plan for the weeks before your move and the day itself.
As soon as your move is likely
- Start a room-by-room list of furniture, boxes and unusually heavy or fragile items.
- Check parking and access at both properties, including stairs, lifts, narrow entrances and any permit restrictions.
- Decide whether you need packing, furniture dismantling or storage.
- Request your quotation early. An estimator may need to visit so the crew, vehicle and timing can be assessed accurately.
Two to four weeks before
- Confirm the moving date and tell utility providers, insurers, banks and other important organisations.
- Use strong boxes and avoid making large boxes too heavy. Pack books and dense items in smaller cartons.
- Label each box with its destination room and a short description of the contents.
- Set aside documents, medication, keys, chargers and valuables that should stay with you.
The final few days
- Finish packing non-essential items and prepare a clearly marked first-night box.
- Defrost and dry appliances where required, and check manufacturer guidance before transport.
- Confirm key collection, parking arrangements and who will be available at each address.
- Keep walkways clear and tell the removals team about anything that needs special handling.
On moving day
- Walk through the plan with the team and point out fragile, high-priority or non-moving items.
- Keep children and pets safely away from loading areas.
- Before leaving, check cupboards, lofts, sheds, garages and outdoor spaces.
- At the new property, direct labelled boxes to the correct rooms and report any concern promptly.
